Huddersfield Canal April 2003 (Martin)
Close-up of the also electric tug
Shot of convoy that has just come through the tunnel from Marsden.   Notice that the passenger boat is first.   It has bow and stern thrusters which are controlled from the tug behind.
Tunnel entrance, which seems a long way from the hills.  There are 3 rail tunnels so perhaps there have been alterations over the years because the canal was here first.
Inspection of boat, checking for any damage
You can see Westmorland in the distance, this is a view of the head of the convoy that has just come through from Marsden
The long wait.  There is only one trip in each direction per day and they have to be booked in advance.  The boats are carefully measured with a profile gauge and on this trip a chap who was taking a newly built boat through was refused passage.
The cover-up begins ....
....and is finished
The boats are roped tightly together with this flexible rubber buffer between then to allow the convoy to bend as necessary.
A problem - we are only a few yards into the tunnel when front thrusters are jammed by a large piece of wood.  After quite a delay and hard work involving getting into the water the trip is saved with the aid of a big saw
Silly sod
Health and safety at work again.   If the bloody roof had fallen in we would have drowned.  If it looks cold - it is and this was at the start of the trip.
Action shot, as is said in porno movies (so I am told).
Canal side architecture, actually now a Sainsbury with Locomotive Bridge in the background.
A close-up Locomotive Bridge, Huddersfield
For the technical a Yaesu FT 817 with a miracle whip on 70 cm, abandoned in favor of beer.   Quite right too, good moorings at the Colliers Arms, Elland.
The Professor on the tiller - larger file size and blow-ups available from the author for any interested parties (male or female).

This was actually our second visit here (Brighouse Basin) last time in the sister boat, Cumberland.  That was 1994 when we did a Shire Cruisers one-way trip from Burnley to Sowerby Bridge - another fantastic week.
